may once learn without ever
understanding why.

consequences which we are
responsible for.

he now understands.

gossip allows time for more
substantial matters.

An obstacle to living
in the present time.

mistress looking on.

But you may have to pay for
it in the morning.

as usual, he shouts: “You’ve got
it completely wrong!”

child with its eyes open,
really sees what’s there.
People ask questions -
Listening for the answers
that prove what they know.
To a frog, a pond’s
an ocean, for a whale
it’s just a puddle.

Pausing when talking only
when needing to breath!

at both ends - Your light will soon
just flicker and fade.
“I hear what you are
saying” - Usually meaning
“I just don’t agree”.
If today is like
yesterday, what can you do
to make it better?

Forever masked by the roles
we are paid to play.

idea, but needed to help
ideas to flourish.

really knew what was.

to a high mountain, nothing
will last forever.

engaging his brain.

expensive coffin!

or powerful, even Kings
eventually die.
The rain in England -
Without it what would people
find to talk about?

he asked - “Here, look it up in
the dictionary”.
Endless striving for
the future, makes it harder
living in the now.
Opening up your
mind to new ideas, away
from the preconceived.
Striving to grasp the
ungraspable - Even though
all things come and go.
Ignorance - Fear of
the unknown, of what you

ever so simple.

she demonstrates, whilst lighting
her next cigarette.
Meditation - A
space of possibilities
waiting to happen.

we once held with such stubborn
single-mindedness.

mistakenly view life and
death as separate.

hobby! Energy that could
be used much better.

do it”, he moans, wasting yet
more precious time.

election, ask them why they
crave so much power.

apart from knowing we will
all be there one day.
Striving to frame a
picture of what I want - But
the paint never dries.
“I know you’re hurting” -
So you push me away to
punish yourself more.
Your deep jealousy -
Stopping me being me for
fear of losing you.
You want it all now -
As everything you have
that is good gets lost.
A winter’s morning -
Pure snow blanket hiding
all imperfections.
Another black eye -
“I’m sorry”, he begged, clenching
his other fist tight!
So many wasted
opportunities - Waiting
for your approval.
I kill you for your
beliefs, you kill me for mine -
Unbelievable!
Caged in ignorance -
Those who refuse to see things
for all that they are.
“What will I get for
helping them?” - The selfish cry
of the greedy fool.

the barman said, whilst selling
another whisky.

tomorrow - There are far too
many tomorrows.

we realise we don’t need
so much for ourselves.
Letting the phone ring
reminds us that important
calls tend to ring back.
Being present in
the now - Seeing what those in
forgetfulness don’t.
Floating on a cloud
of calm, warm air all around -
Peace wrapped around me.
Seeds of happiness -
Plant, cultivate, and water
them regularly.
Like drinking salty
water never quenches a
thirst, “wants” are the same.

craving, with the illusion
of helping others.
Like a stormy sea,
a clouded mind obscures
the truth of most things.
“Many things to do” -
But are they necessary
or just a habit?
Endless busyness -
A misguided diversion
from seeing the truth.
Grasping after so
many things - No wonder we
rarely feel fulfilled.
Old age, sickness, death -
Those often repressed fears that
affect all we do.
Feelings may be good,
bad or indifferent - But
all will one day change.
Bad feelings arise -
Don’t suppress these but explore
them with awareness.
Although nothing may
last forever, care about
what is here today.
All adults have been
fragile children - Are we
much different now?

did no harm”, he lied, as he
punched his son again.
“We” exist only
as long as conditions for
survival exist.
“Seeds of violence”
planted daily - Watered by
lack of awareness.
The “past” once was, the
“present” is now - The “future”
starts with us “today”.
With anger in the
heart, every time the flames
are fuelled we burn more.
Whether good or bad -
Our actions, thoughts and words
have an influence.
Change - Without it, all
children would stay children and
flowers remain seeds.
We moan about rain,
but without it, no water -
No water, we die.
To admit “I do
not know” begins a journey
to understanding.
Colourful rainbow -
Circled over grey dirty
concrete motorway.
Do not stop the birds
from singing their songs - We need
reminding of peace.
Each day is like a
fresh planted garden, ready
for meaning to bloom.
In wars, missing the
true enemies - Ambition,
power, hatred, greed.

again as a child - No
more fighting for things.

house on your back - Wherever
you go you’re at home.

boundaries, no borders, each
living side by side.
Walking for walking -

to arrive somewhere.
A candle’s flame - It’s
brightness is unrecognised

a bird - Not noticed when it’s
there, mourned when it’s gone.

by the world’s silence.

in love, is worth more than a
million in hate.

alone - Looking inside and
finding no one there.
Forgiving myself,
admitting I’m wrong - First step
to forgive others.
Dreaming what things to
get next - Forgetting what we
already have now.

care, a seed will always stay
a seed - No flowers.

of control, we stubbornly
deny our fears.
“Life was better then”,
he reminisced - Forgetting
the good of today.
A “lucky” rabbit’s
foot - Not so lucky for the
three legged rabbit!
“He’s an invalid”,
he called him - Does he really
think he’s not valid?

wrapping - The dead animal’s
suffering, hidden.

camouflaged in plastic - Dead
animals disguised.

crack of bone - Torment behind
an anguished curtain.

student”, he said - All day on
his mobile phone.

hopping - Darting eyes, missing
what is really there.

at the hospital entrance,
filling me with hope!
Watching waves - A bit
like our lives - We’ll never
see the same one twice.
The sun always shines,
even when it rains - The clouds
just get in the way.
Being silent saves
energy used talking - For
something more useful.
I curse my knee, it
hurts. But it’s not my knee’s fault -
It’s a sensation.
My body is a
body - It is what people
see, not who I am.
Ignorance can cause
suffering - Not seeing the
way things really are.
“I” am today due
to the conditions around
me - These can all change.
We create the world
ourselves - So how can we
blame anyone else?
“I think I can’t do
it” - So don’t think about it
all then, just do it.
People praise and blame,
and the world goes on - Hunger,
selfishness and greed.
You can’t have it all -
To gain one thing, you have to
let something else go.
“I can’t wear them shoes
with that skirt”, she moaned - “You have
ten pairs!”, he replied.
In a world of noise
and speed, people get bored with
quiet and patience.
Despair when things aren’t
as we want - That “perfection”
which doesn’t exist.
Wanting more, when we
have so much - Frustrated by
not having it all.
The fears are within
us - Running off elsewhere will
never change that truth.
Attacked, abused, and
criticised - Patience is a
strength, not a weakness.
“I think I know”, he
said - If he has to “think”, he
doesn’t really “know”.
All that is born or
created will one day die
or will cease to be.
Meditation - Some
tranquillity and calm, the
mind is slowing down.
“It’s not the way I
want it!” - Try accepting things
as the way things are.
Making the world fit
to what we want - But perhaps
that’s the way it is?
Planting seeds of hope
throughout a desert - Waiting
patiently for rain.
Going around in
circles - Running away, but
destined to return.
Nothing exists by
itself - All is dependent
on something other.
Carried away by
the future, lost in the past -
The present is now.
Forever running
after more things - Like a dog
chasing his tail.
Impermanence is
not suffering - Thinking things
are permanent is.
“What happens next in
the world?”, he asked - “That depends
on what you do next”.
Better to do small
things with good intentions, than
bigger things with bad.
Looking elsewhere for
happiness - Missing those joys
we have here today.
Like a disturbed pool
of muddy water - No clear
mind, nothing is clear.
Believing we can’t
be happy until we can
get that one more thing.
What has ever been
in existence, cannot now
just cease to exist.
Just one smile or
word - Penetrating here, there,
and everywhere.
Protesting for “Peace”
at the Air Force base - The same
day he raped a friend.
The planet earth - One
living organism of
many elements.
My mind constructs all -
By understanding my mind,
I understand all.
A world constructed
by deluded minds is full
of hatred and pain.
To see clearly the
mind needs calm - Like a rough sea
becomes a still pond.
Accepting death, the
killer left his mind of hate
and began to live.
We need freedom and
space to breath, be happy, and
to bloom - Like flowers.
A whisper of peace
through shouts of hate - Lost voices
echo in the dark.
Hurding lambs off to
their death - The farmer will be
there himself one day.
Wisdom - A clear stream,
springing from life, flowing to
new generations.
Surrounded by the
world’s cries - So much noise only
the loudest gets heard.
“Why pay fees on your
overdraft?” - Don’t buy those things
you don’t really need!
So many words are
spoken, so many times - They
become meaningless.
Anger bites like a
poisonous snake - Quick, painful,
and often deadly.
If you’re angry, you’re
angry - Don’t deny that, but
start to look at why.
Just another war -
Showing us that violence
is again the way.
“Protesting for Peace” -
But “Peace” starts with us and what
we do, not slogans.
Those hurting themselves,
cause others to hurt also -
The vicious circle!
Fruit and grain to make
alcohol drinks - Land better
used for the hungry.
“My young son is so
violent”, she sighed - After
hitting him again.
Nothing is born from
nothing - It just arises
out of other things.
Organisations -
A playground to exercise
egos and power.
The “present” is made
from the “past”, and is helping
to shape the “future”.
Problems or puzzles? -
“Puzzles” can be solved, “problems”
seem impossible.
Emphasising what
is wrong and negative, we
miss what good there is.
Rather than complain
about the world, be a good
example in it.
My corpse is with me
already - The difference
is it’s still alive.
If those things here now
will all one day change and die,
what is really true?
Science - Obsessed with
theories, but perhaps missing
the point completely.
Meditation - Free
from cares, concerns, ambition,
wanting and grasping.
Blaming others when
my injuries are caused by
me - No one to blame.
Between oppression
and freedom, stormy oceans -
Navigate with care.
Obsessed by our
senses, ruled by quick pleasures -
Anything for more.
Forever craving
for things “bigger and better” -
Rarely satisfied.
However much we
plan, we can’t stop rain - Nature
is more powerful.
To care for others
you must first do a harder
thing - Care for yourself.
Greed, hate, delusion -
Foundations for killing, theft,
lying and cheating.
No one’s the same as
another - All are unique
and individual.
Views, opinions,
philosophies - Forever
upsetting the world.
Books may share knowledge,
but true understanding comes
from experience.
Arrogant young men,
bored and cynical - Swagger
of selfish contempt.
Lightning flash, thunder
cracks, wind and rain - The mighty
forces of nature.
No task will ever
be possible, without first
believing it is.
Some crave power to
achieve selfish desires -
Others to bring peace.
The person I see
today is not the same as
I saw yesterday.
Comparing yourself
to others is useless - You’re
a unique person.
Admit your mistakes -
The more you run from them, the
smaller you become.
By keep labelling
some people “enemies”, they
may just stay that way.
What another thinks
about you, won’t hurt - These are
just their thoughts, not yours.
“Child is battered
to death with a spoon” - We must
ban all cutlery!
With life full of tasks,
responsibilities, and
things - No time to breathe.
Endlessly smoking,
drinking, using drugs - Blaming
others for your health.
Happiness can’t be
bought like food - You must grow it
in your heart and mind.
Hate planted in your
heart, grows like weeds - Strangling
any roots of peace.
Never satisfied -
Sunny days are too hot, and
rainy days too cold!
If we had to walk
three miles for water, we
would value it more.
Knowledge - Of most use
when it helps to develop
fresh understanding.
Gaining more knowledge
is useless - If nothing of
use is done with it.
When criticised, stay
calm, don’t react so quick - Let
them think what they like!
Hiding behind masks
I think others want to see -
Deceiving myself.
Looking with envy
at others - Impatiently
wanting to be them.
So much suffering -
But we still carry on like
all those before us.
We are born, get old,
get sick, and die - This is all
we can rely on.
Whatever we may
believe today, may not be
the same tomorrow.
Haunted by anger,
paralysed by fear - Controlled
by feelings within.
That space between night
and day - When all is silent,
still, fearless, at peace.
“I was drunk, couldn’t
help myself” - The same excuse
of the selfish fool.
As new friendships grow
like fresh planted seeds, old ones
wither and decay.
So civilised with
technology and things - And
increased depression.
“Here’s some charity”,
said the spider to the fly -
Before eating him!
We can’t do it all,
we are just human beings -
We do what we can.
Holding fixed views leaves
no room for change, as we won’t
admit being wrong.
Even when drowning
in water, we still complain
of nothing to drink.
We are not taught, we
learn by ourselves - Things just
help to find the way.
Knowledge is nothing -
Without its understanding
arising within.
Be fully in the
present and you will never
be in the wrong place.
“I haven’t the time
to do it”, she moaned - Wasting
the time to do it.
Grasping, possessing,
craving things to never change -
In a changing world.
What is worst - Being
dead and buried or alive
and dead to the world?
Extremes - Like never
leaving a river bank to
see the other side.
We inhabit the
earth, bugs and germs inhabit
us - Who was here first?
Discrimination -
Ignorance, delusion and
perceived difference.
Believing power
and wealth makes us happy - But
peace comes from within.
If we looked after
ourselves like our cars,
we’d be healthier.
Beauty is ugly,
youth is old age, life is death -
Always denying.
Needs get overlooked
when we don’t know others or
feel unconnected.
From power and wealth,
artificial smiles - Fake
friends wanting glory.
Ideology,
Differing ways of thinking -
More to think about.
Fear of death? No way!
We love war, guns and killing -
Perhaps we fear life?
As slaves of the past
and delusions today, we
wander aimlessly.
Negative actions
bring long-term consequences -
One day to be faced.
Suppressed hatred, all
lasting, unresolved - Storing
up future trouble.
Using violence
against things we dislike brings
yet more violence.
“War is wrong”, I preach -
Until what I like, want or
crave is affected.
War will never stop -
Until anger, hate and greed
cease inside us all.
Using violence
for what we want - Planting seeds
for more suffering.
All one family
on this small Earth - What affects
one soon affects all.
More things to buy as
more people die, needing food
and water - Progress?
“I know it all”, the
student boasted, “I’ve written
a dissertation!”
Spending millions
exploring space, when there’s so
much missed here on Earth.
Guns by themselves don’t
kill - Misguided people who
pull the trigger do.
So much dreaming and
thinking - Wasteful thoughts, judgements,
views, memories, fears.
To meditate - To
see prejudice, anger, hurt,
selfishness and fear.
Seeing and hearing
what we want, the bits we like -
Ignoring the rest.
This is life - never
satisfied, never perfect,
and never will be.
Foolishly looking
for something outside of me
to deal with my life.
We think, speculate,
analyse, fantasise - Full
of views and beliefs!
The price of freedom
is having nobody to
blame but ourselves.
Fuelling an ego
we think is “us” - Desires,
needs and addictions.
Look close and see most
things as they are - Empty, false
and unfulfiling.
Standing at the gate
of war - Consumed by ego,
pride and selfish greed.
“I’m too busy to
meditate”, she said - Missing
the point of it all.
Many people think
they “know” when they don’t - They just
talk as if they do.
In ignorance of
their experience, we judge
their behaviour.
Full of memories,
concepts, views, knowledge - But what
of understanding?
Too busy talking,
nothing gets done - Doing so
much, no time to talk.
The price of free speech
for us is hearing things from
others we don’t like.
Obsessed with the past
and how we are - Missing the
now and what we are.
Craving the perfect
job, friend, partner, object to
possess and save us.
The illusion of
having to do, go somewhere,
get things, be something.
Confused by life - But
life is very simple, we
just complicate it.
“It’s so unfair”, he
complained, believing that life
should be otherwise.
Discontent with what
we have, we crave more - But aren’t
most things good enough?
Seeing what we want
to see or what suits us, not
what is really there.
Nothing exists till
passing our senses and
processed by the mind.
Memories - Thoughts of
the past, selective, biased
and often haunting.
If this is what life
is about, no wonder some
people kill themselves.
The past has gone - By
taking care of the now, we
take care of the past.
Although we have an
amazing brain, we misuse
it to cause such harm.
I want you to be
the way I want you to be -
For me, me, me, me!
Wanting, getting and
wanting more again, better -
Never satisfied.
Hindered by narrow
thoughts and beliefs, imprisoned
by views and judgements.
Fruitlessly striving
to selfishly make the world
fit what we want now.
Worry and fear go
when vanity of cares, wants
and ambition do.
Death is so certain -
But we don’t receive any
guidance to prepare.
Happiness can’t be
found - It’s already here, masked
by unhappy thoughts.
Human talent, so
wasted - Weapons, drug pushing,
and sexploitation.
Needing things outside
us to be happy - So what
happens when they go?
Ever running for
ultimate pleasures - Missing
nice things on the way.
So weighed down with hurts -
Desperately throwing them
on other people.
Every belief
or view we will ever have
will at some point change.
Like photographers
fix photos, we stubbornly
fix our own views.
By desperately
wanting one thing, brings conflict
about what we don’t.
Looking to science
for a better world - Missing
what we can do now.
Accumulating
views, beliefs, ideas, concepts -
An unmade jigsaw.
We grow from inside,
like flowers in a garden -
Just plant the right seeds.
Not doing what we
want because of others is
not life - It’s prison.
Like weeds take over
a garden, habits will us
without good tending.
Religion - Worship
it, pray to it, hide in it -
But not using it.
“Happy again”, she
thought, when she buys her next thing -
Forever shopping.
Moaning problems are
unfair, wastes energy we
could use to solve them.
The developed world?
Developed outwardly, not
inwardly perhaps.
“I know who I am” -
But who is this “I” that says
“I know who I am”?
Becoming like your
Enemy means you’ve lost the
battle and the war.
Freedom that needs things
can go, freedom granted can
be taken away.
Regret - Setting up
an unattained ideal, not
getting what I want.
Locked up tight in a
cold dark matchbox - Unable
to strike out and light.
So many words said,
endlessly - Meaning no more
than when first spoken.
Mouth opens, rubbish
falls out - Mindlessly building
mountains of nonsense.
Things happened before,
they will do so again - That’s
just the way it is.
Doing something that
benefits another should
be reward enough.
Seeing what’s wrong with
people depresses - Looking
for the good, uplifts.
When ill, avoid just
becoming your symptoms, an
object of disease.
Love yourself, give not
take, live simple, cause no harm,
care about others.
When something is done,
ask what is the intention
behind the action.
Ecstasy - Short term
immediate pleasure, no
thought for the future.
Content with what you
have - Not suffering, craving
things you cannot get.
Changing your mind is
not wrong - If done through reason,
freedom and judgement.
By understanding
ourselves, we’ll have all the
books we’ll ever need.
To understand the
world and everyone else,
understand yourself.
It takes the death of
the old for there to be the
birth of something new.
Not indulging or
repressing, just becoming
open to what is.
Caring for others
is almost impossible
when hurting yourself.
Helping others with
their problems highlights your own,
confronting yourself.
Things tend to hurt so
bad, when we hold on so tight
to blaming others.
When hurting, we blame
others or feel guilty - Not
look at why we hurt.
Is it possible,
to ever walk in a room
with no agenda?
Making others right
or wrong, to feel secure
in uncertainty.
Caring for others
with problems, may mean seeing
the same within us.
Breathing in the pain
of others, feeling it, and
breathing out good-will.
Grasping even good
beliefs with aggression, just
breeds more aggression.
The way to stop war
is to stop hating those we
call the enemy.
Fruitlessly craving
the secure certainty
that can never be.
Shouting, condemning
the USA - The young boy
wears a Nike shirt.
Feelings come and they
will go - It just depends on
how long it will take.
Failure at goals
set by others - They weren’t mine,
so I’ve not failed.
Anger is just a
feeling, a response - What we
do with it matters.
Forever craving
this and that - Quenching our
thirst but still thirsty.
No living person
will ever be consistent -
Only dead ones are.
By becoming dull
to the pains of life, we miss
it’s simple pleasures.
Doing what needs to
be done without wasting time
and energy why.
Happiness might be
knowing that we don’t need to
strive for happiness.
Everything starts
as a thought, a dream - The art
is to make it real.
Thinking that only
murderers can kill, misses
the same in us all.
All children are born
perfect - It’s adults after
that can mess them up.
What dies inside us
whilst we live is worse than the
death of life later.
Apathy will give
political dictators
the power they crave.
There is always ‘choice’,
however difficult the
Consequences seem.
Thinking and acting
like the world owes us something -
But we are the world.
Heaven is here, now -
But with the belief it is
elsewhere, we miss it.
As actions come from
thoughts, by having good thoughts good
actions will follow.
As athletes work to

train for right thinking.
Changing how we think
about things can change how we
feel and what we do.
Those that may copy
will tend to do, but often
not understand why.

to be somewhere else.

So powerful, their words can
topple Governments!

instability, sowing
seeds of disorder.

girl hangs from a tree!
When people do wrong,
the easiest targets are
usually told off!
They want half of all
voters for strikes, but not same
for State Elections!
Songs on radio
about 'no' not meaning 'no' -
More anthems for rape!
Shaking their rumps on
MTV - Girls as objects,
'hoes' and dancing breasts!
Who I was; all that
I've done; what I've become - But
would you really know?

may once learn without ever
understanding why.
Our actions have
consequences which we are
responsible for.
The past has now gone,
the future is not yet here -
“Now” is all there is.
“I know what you mean” -
Giving the impression that
he now understands.
Avoiding idol
gossip allows time for more
substantial matters.
Hope in the future -
An obstacle to living
in the present time.
A stone is to a
mountain like a small drop of
water, an ocean.
A thrown pebble -
Disturbing a tranquil pond,
like one careless word.
Priest preaching morals,
“Adultery is wrong” - With
mistress looking on.
Sex is often free -
But you may have to pay for
it in the morning.
Exaggerating,
as usual, he shouts: “You’ve got
it completely wrong!”
With a fresh mind, the
child with its eyes open,
really sees what’s there.
People ask questions -
Listening for the answers
that prove what they know.
To a frog, a pond’s
an ocean, for a whale
it’s just a puddle.
A politician -
Pausing when talking only
when needing to breath!
Death generally
takes care of itself - It is
life that needs a hand.
Burning the candle
at both ends - Your light will soon
just flicker and fade.
“I hear what you are
saying” - Usually meaning
“I just don’t agree”.
If today is like
yesterday, what can you do
to make it better?
Our true humanness -
Forever masked by the roles
we are paid to play.
A baby - Often
nice to dress up, but a pain
when the pub’s open.
“Violence is wrong”,
children are told - As we hit
them for doing wrong.
“Violence doesn’t
solve anything”, he said, whilst
marching off to war.
We have all been born,
One day we will all die - What
shall we do till then?
Freedom - Not just an
idea, but needed to help
ideas to flourish.
“That’s not true”, she screamed,
without much thought - As if she
really knew what was.
Briefcase in one hand,
mobile in the other -
Oh, such importance!
From a grain of sand,
to a high mountain, nothing
will last forever.
Grey concrete jungles -
Great on the drawing board, but
clueless of people.
Yearning for the past,
dreaming things were better then -
Wasting the present.
“You’re too sensitive!”,
he snapped back - Speaking before
engaging his brain.
No size of wealth stops
you dying - But you’ll have an
expensive coffin!
No matter how rich
or powerful, even Kings
eventually die.
The rain in England -
Without it what would people
find to talk about?
“What’s inquisitive?”,
he asked - “Here, look it up in
the dictionary”.
Endless striving for
the future, makes it harder
living in the now.
Opening up your
mind to new ideas, away
from the preconceived.
Striving to grasp the
ungraspable - Even though
all things come and go.
Ignorance - Fear of
the unknown, of what you
don’t yet understand.
If you die today -
What have you done of any
use or importance?
Between birth and death -
A space full of creative
possibilities.
“I do know”, he says
boasting - Although nothing is
ever so simple.
Searching hard for truth -
Not simply accepting the
fashionable ways.
“Killing is wrong”, he
rants, as he plants another
bomb to make his point.
“Cars are choking us”,
she demonstrates, whilst lighting
her next cigarette.
Meditation - A
space of possibilities
waiting to happen.
Just a dream - Those views
we once held with such stubborn
single-mindedness.
As if it was a
limitless commodity,
life is bought and sold.
In ignorance we
mistakenly view life and
death as separate.
Moaning - A human
hobby! Energy that could
be used much better.
“I have no time to
do it”, he moans, wasting yet
more precious time.
When someone stands for
election, ask them why they
crave so much power.
Death - A mystery,
apart from knowing we will
all be there one day.
Striving to frame a
picture of what I want - But
the paint never dries.
“I know you’re hurting” -
So you push me away to
punish yourself more.
Your deep jealousy -
Stopping me being me for
fear of losing you.
You want it all now -
As everything you have
that is good gets lost.
A winter’s morning -
Pure snow blanket hiding
all imperfections.
Another black eye -
“I’m sorry”, he begged, clenching
his other fist tight!
So many wasted
opportunities - Waiting
for your approval.
I kill you for your
beliefs, you kill me for mine -
Unbelievable!
Caged in ignorance -
Those who refuse to see things
for all that they are.
“What will I get for
helping them?” - The selfish cry
of the greedy fool.
If exploring space
seems a challenge, try feeding
the hungry on earth.
“I’m worth more than I’m
paid”, said the worker with an
inflated ego.
Contentment - Like the
sky is still the sky even
when the clouds appear.
Personal insults -
Just words from the weak to help
them feel powerful.
Parliament - A
huge circus of power games
and self-interest.
The wise - Free from the
prison of appearance who
see things as they are.
Money-makers are
devoted to money - Like
parents to children.
No two people see
anything the same - What then
is reality?
“Celebrate the new
millennium!” - Watch children
die for want of food.
Gossiping behind
my back - Running from your own
inadequacies.
Looking around for
others to blame - When the faults
are closer to home.
Silence - A rare glimpse
of peace through the now endless
noise and distractions.
Ringing mobile
phones - A deluded belief
of self-importance.
“Road Rage” - New excuse
for selfish violence by
ignorant drivers.
“Joyriding” - Trendy
headline ignoring thoughtless
suffering and pain.
“I hate drug pushers”,
the barman said, whilst selling
another whisky.
Don’t put off peace till
tomorrow - There are far too
many tomorrows.
We can let go when
we realise we don’t need
so much for ourselves.
Letting the phone ring
reminds us that important
calls tend to ring back.
Being present in
the now - Seeing what those in
forgetfulness don’t.
Floating on a cloud
of calm, warm air all around -
Peace wrapped around me.
Seeds of happiness -
Plant, cultivate, and water
them regularly.
Like drinking salty
water never quenches a
thirst, “wants” are the same.
“The Lottery” - Wealth
craving, with the illusion
of helping others.
Like a stormy sea,
a clouded mind obscures
the truth of most things.
“Many things to do” -
But are they necessary
or just a habit?
Endless busyness -
A misguided diversion
from seeing the truth.
Grasping after so
many things - No wonder we
rarely feel fulfilled.
Old age, sickness, death -
Those often repressed fears that
affect all we do.
Feelings may be good,
bad or indifferent - But
all will one day change.
Bad feelings arise -
Don’t suppress these but explore
them with awareness.
Although nothing may
last forever, care about
what is here today.
All adults have been
fragile children - Are we
much different now?
“My Dad hitting me
did no harm”, he lied, as he
punched his son again.
“We” exist only
as long as conditions for
survival exist.
“Seeds of violence”
planted daily - Watered by
lack of awareness.
The “past” once was, the
“present” is now - The “future”
starts with us “today”.
With anger in the
heart, every time the flames
are fuelled we burn more.
Whether good or bad -
Our actions, thoughts and words
have an influence.
Change - Without it, all
children would stay children and
flowers remain seeds.
We moan about rain,
but without it, no water -
No water, we die.
To admit “I do
not know” begins a journey
to understanding.
Colourful rainbow -
Circled over grey dirty
concrete motorway.
Do not stop the birds
from singing their songs - We need
reminding of peace.
Each day is like a
fresh planted garden, ready
for meaning to bloom.
In wars, missing the
true enemies - Ambition,
power, hatred, greed.
Now I’m old, I play
again as a child - No
more fighting for things.
Oh, little snail,
house on your back - Wherever
you go you’re at home.
Forest of trees - No
boundaries, no borders, each
living side by side.
Walking for walking -
No desire to rush or
to arrive somewhere.
A candle’s flame - It’s
brightness is unrecognised
until it goes out.
The daily song of
a bird - Not noticed when it’s
there, mourned when it’s gone.
Criticised through life,
eulogised when dead - The tears
of the hypocrites.
For Diana - A
sea of flowers, rivers of
tears, oceans of love.
“I help the homeless”,
he boasts - Tossing another
coin, walking on past.
Disfigured by war,
a child cries “why?” - Deafened
by the world’s silence.
A newly born thought
needs nurturing - Like an egg
does to a penguin.
A million words
are useless, if not spoken
with integrity.
Just one word spoken
in love, is worth more than a
million in hate.
Fearful of being
alone - Looking inside and
finding no one there.
Forgiving myself,
admitting I’m wrong - First step
to forgive others.
Dreaming what things to
get next - Forgetting what we
already have now.
Without love, help, and
care, a seed will always stay
a seed - No flowers.
With the illusion
of control, we stubbornly
deny our fears.
“Life was better then”,
he reminisced - Forgetting
the good of today.
A “lucky” rabbit’s
foot - Not so lucky for the
three legged rabbit!
“He’s an invalid”,
he called him - Does he really
think he’s not valid?
Presented in nice
wrapping - The dead animal’s
suffering, hidden.
The daily beatings
and endless taunts of “stupid” -
Only bruises fade.
Masked by other names,
camouflaged in plastic - Dead
animals disguised.
A stifled cry, the
crack of bone - Torment behind
an anguished curtain.
“Independence!”, she
demanded, whilst taking more
money from Daddy.
“I’m such a hard-up
student”, he said - All day on
his mobile phone.
Like catching a train -
Waiting for someone else’s
route and timetable.
Like TV channel
hopping - Darting eyes, missing
what is really there.
“Dead Slow”, said the sign
at the hospital entrance,
filling me with hope!
Watching waves - A bit
like our lives - We’ll never
see the same one twice.
The sun always shines,
even when it rains - The clouds
just get in the way.
Being silent saves
energy used talking - For
something more useful.
I curse my knee, it
hurts. But it’s not my knee’s fault -
It’s a sensation.
My body is a
body - It is what people
see, not who I am.
Ignorance can cause
suffering - Not seeing the
way things really are.
“I” am today due
to the conditions around
me - These can all change.
We create the world
ourselves - So how can we
blame anyone else?
“I think I can’t do
it” - So don’t think about it
all then, just do it.
People praise and blame,
and the world goes on - Hunger,
selfishness and greed.
You can’t have it all -
To gain one thing, you have to
let something else go.
“I can’t wear them shoes
with that skirt”, she moaned - “You have
ten pairs!”, he replied.
In a world of noise
and speed, people get bored with
quiet and patience.
Despair when things aren’t
as we want - That “perfection”
which doesn’t exist.
Wanting more, when we
have so much - Frustrated by
not having it all.
The fears are within
us - Running off elsewhere will
never change that truth.
Attacked, abused, and
criticised - Patience is a
strength, not a weakness.
“I think I know”, he
said - If he has to “think”, he
doesn’t really “know”.
All that is born or
created will one day die
or will cease to be.
Meditation - Some
tranquillity and calm, the
mind is slowing down.
“It’s not the way I
want it!” - Try accepting things
as the way things are.
Making the world fit
to what we want - But perhaps
that’s the way it is?
Planting seeds of hope
throughout a desert - Waiting
patiently for rain.
Going around in
circles - Running away, but
destined to return.
Nothing exists by
itself - All is dependent
on something other.
Carried away by
the future, lost in the past -
The present is now.
Forever running
after more things - Like a dog
chasing his tail.
Impermanence is
not suffering - Thinking things
are permanent is.
“What happens next in
the world?”, he asked - “That depends
on what you do next”.
Better to do small
things with good intentions, than
bigger things with bad.
Looking elsewhere for
happiness - Missing those joys
we have here today.
Like a disturbed pool
of muddy water - No clear
mind, nothing is clear.
Believing we can’t
be happy until we can
get that one more thing.
What has ever been
in existence, cannot now
just cease to exist.
Just one smile or
word - Penetrating here, there,
and everywhere.
Protesting for “Peace”
at the Air Force base - The same
day he raped a friend.
The planet earth - One
living organism of
many elements.
My mind constructs all -
By understanding my mind,
I understand all.
A world constructed
by deluded minds is full
of hatred and pain.
To see clearly the
mind needs calm - Like a rough sea
becomes a still pond.
Accepting death, the
killer left his mind of hate
and began to live.
We need freedom and
space to breath, be happy, and
to bloom - Like flowers.
A whisper of peace
through shouts of hate - Lost voices
echo in the dark.
Hurding lambs off to
their death - The farmer will be
there himself one day.
Wisdom - A clear stream,
springing from life, flowing to
new generations.
Surrounded by the
world’s cries - So much noise only
the loudest gets heard.
“Why pay fees on your
overdraft?” - Don’t buy those things
you don’t really need!
So many words are
spoken, so many times - They
become meaningless.
Anger bites like a
poisonous snake - Quick, painful,
and often deadly.
If you’re angry, you’re
angry - Don’t deny that, but
start to look at why.
Just another war -
Showing us that violence
is again the way.
“Protesting for Peace” -
But “Peace” starts with us and what
we do, not slogans.
Those hurting themselves,
cause others to hurt also -
The vicious circle!
Fruit and grain to make
alcohol drinks - Land better
used for the hungry.
“My young son is so
violent”, she sighed - After
hitting him again.
Nothing is born from
nothing - It just arises
out of other things.
Organisations -
A playground to exercise
egos and power.
The “present” is made
from the “past”, and is helping
to shape the “future”.
Problems or puzzles? -
“Puzzles” can be solved, “problems”
seem impossible.
Emphasising what
is wrong and negative, we
miss what good there is.
Rather than complain
about the world, be a good
example in it.
My corpse is with me
already - The difference
is it’s still alive.
If those things here now
will all one day change and die,
what is really true?
Science - Obsessed with
theories, but perhaps missing
the point completely.
Meditation - Free
from cares, concerns, ambition,
wanting and grasping.
Blaming others when
my injuries are caused by
me - No one to blame.
Between oppression
and freedom, stormy oceans -
Navigate with care.
Obsessed by our
senses, ruled by quick pleasures -
Anything for more.
Forever craving
for things “bigger and better” -
Rarely satisfied.
However much we
plan, we can’t stop rain - Nature
is more powerful.
To care for others
you must first do a harder
thing - Care for yourself.
Greed, hate, delusion -
Foundations for killing, theft,
lying and cheating.
No one’s the same as
another - All are unique
and individual.
Views, opinions,
philosophies - Forever
upsetting the world.
Books may share knowledge,
but true understanding comes
from experience.
Arrogant young men,
bored and cynical - Swagger
of selfish contempt.
Lightning flash, thunder
cracks, wind and rain - The mighty
forces of nature.
No task will ever
be possible, without first
believing it is.
Some crave power to
achieve selfish desires -
Others to bring peace.
The person I see
today is not the same as
I saw yesterday.
Comparing yourself
to others is useless - You’re
a unique person.
Admit your mistakes -
The more you run from them, the
smaller you become.
By keep labelling
some people “enemies”, they
may just stay that way.
What another thinks
about you, won’t hurt - These are
just their thoughts, not yours.
“Child is battered
to death with a spoon” - We must
ban all cutlery!
With life full of tasks,
responsibilities, and
things - No time to breathe.
Endlessly smoking,
drinking, using drugs - Blaming
others for your health.
Happiness can’t be
bought like food - You must grow it
in your heart and mind.
Hate planted in your
heart, grows like weeds - Strangling
any roots of peace.
Never satisfied -
Sunny days are too hot, and
rainy days too cold!
If we had to walk
three miles for water, we
would value it more.
Knowledge - Of most use
when it helps to develop
fresh understanding.
Gaining more knowledge
is useless - If nothing of
use is done with it.
When criticised, stay
calm, don’t react so quick - Let
them think what they like!
Hiding behind masks
I think others want to see -
Deceiving myself.
Looking with envy
at others - Impatiently
wanting to be them.
So much suffering -
But we still carry on like
all those before us.
We are born, get old,
get sick, and die - This is all
we can rely on.
Whatever we may
believe today, may not be
the same tomorrow.
Haunted by anger,
paralysed by fear - Controlled
by feelings within.
That space between night
and day - When all is silent,
still, fearless, at peace.
“I was drunk, couldn’t
help myself” - The same excuse
of the selfish fool.
As new friendships grow
like fresh planted seeds, old ones
wither and decay.
So civilised with
technology and things - And
increased depression.
“Here’s some charity”,
said the spider to the fly -
Before eating him!
We can’t do it all,
we are just human beings -
We do what we can.
Holding fixed views leaves
no room for change, as we won’t
admit being wrong.
Even when drowning
in water, we still complain
of nothing to drink.
We are not taught, we
learn by ourselves - Things just
help to find the way.
Knowledge is nothing -
Without its understanding
arising within.
Be fully in the
present and you will never
be in the wrong place.
“I haven’t the time
to do it”, she moaned - Wasting
the time to do it.
Grasping, possessing,
craving things to never change -
In a changing world.
What is worst - Being
dead and buried or alive
and dead to the world?
Extremes - Like never
leaving a river bank to
see the other side.
We inhabit the
earth, bugs and germs inhabit
us - Who was here first?
Discrimination -
Ignorance, delusion and
perceived difference.
Believing power
and wealth makes us happy - But
peace comes from within.
If we looked after
ourselves like our cars,
we’d be healthier.
Beauty is ugly,
youth is old age, life is death -
Always denying.
Needs get overlooked
when we don’t know others or
feel unconnected.
From power and wealth,
artificial smiles - Fake
friends wanting glory.
Ideology,
Differing ways of thinking -
More to think about.
Fear of death? No way!
We love war, guns and killing -
Perhaps we fear life?
As slaves of the past
and delusions today, we
wander aimlessly.
Negative actions
bring long-term consequences -
One day to be faced.
Suppressed hatred, all
lasting, unresolved - Storing
up future trouble.
Using violence
against things we dislike brings
yet more violence.
“War is wrong”, I preach -
Until what I like, want or
crave is affected.
War will never stop -
Until anger, hate and greed
cease inside us all.
Using violence
for what we want - Planting seeds
for more suffering.
All one family
on this small Earth - What affects
one soon affects all.
More things to buy as
more people die, needing food
and water - Progress?
“I know it all”, the
student boasted, “I’ve written
a dissertation!”
Spending millions
exploring space, when there’s so
much missed here on Earth.
Guns by themselves don’t
kill - Misguided people who
pull the trigger do.
So much dreaming and
thinking - Wasteful thoughts, judgements,
views, memories, fears.
To meditate - To
see prejudice, anger, hurt,
selfishness and fear.
Seeing and hearing
what we want, the bits we like -
Ignoring the rest.
This is life - never
satisfied, never perfect,
and never will be.
Foolishly looking
for something outside of me
to deal with my life.
We think, speculate,
analyse, fantasise - Full
of views and beliefs!
The price of freedom
is having nobody to
blame but ourselves.
Fuelling an ego
we think is “us” - Desires,
needs and addictions.
Look close and see most
things as they are - Empty, false
and unfulfiling.
Standing at the gate
of war - Consumed by ego,
pride and selfish greed.
“I’m too busy to
meditate”, she said - Missing
the point of it all.
Many people think
they “know” when they don’t - They just
talk as if they do.
In ignorance of
their experience, we judge
their behaviour.
Full of memories,
concepts, views, knowledge - But what
of understanding?
Too busy talking,
nothing gets done - Doing so
much, no time to talk.
The price of free speech
for us is hearing things from
others we don’t like.
Obsessed with the past
and how we are - Missing the
now and what we are.
Craving the perfect
job, friend, partner, object to
possess and save us.
The illusion of
having to do, go somewhere,
get things, be something.
Confused by life - But
life is very simple, we
just complicate it.
“It’s so unfair”, he
complained, believing that life
should be otherwise.
Discontent with what
we have, we crave more - But aren’t
most things good enough?
Seeing what we want
to see or what suits us, not
what is really there.
Nothing exists till
passing our senses and
processed by the mind.
Memories - Thoughts of
the past, selective, biased
and often haunting.
If this is what life
is about, no wonder some
people kill themselves.
The past has gone - By
taking care of the now, we
take care of the past.
Although we have an
amazing brain, we misuse
it to cause such harm.
I want you to be
the way I want you to be -
For me, me, me, me!
Wanting, getting and
wanting more again, better -
Never satisfied.
Hindered by narrow
thoughts and beliefs, imprisoned
by views and judgements.
Fruitlessly striving
to selfishly make the world
fit what we want now.
Worry and fear go
when vanity of cares, wants
and ambition do.
Death is so certain -
But we don’t receive any
guidance to prepare.
Happiness can’t be
found - It’s already here, masked
by unhappy thoughts.
Human talent, so
wasted - Weapons, drug pushing,
and sexploitation.
Needing things outside
us to be happy - So what
happens when they go?
Ever running for
ultimate pleasures - Missing
nice things on the way.
So weighed down with hurts -
Desperately throwing them
on other people.
Every belief
or view we will ever have
will at some point change.
Like photographers
fix photos, we stubbornly
fix our own views.
By desperately
wanting one thing, brings conflict
about what we don’t.
Looking to science
for a better world - Missing
what we can do now.
Accumulating
views, beliefs, ideas, concepts -
An unmade jigsaw.
We grow from inside,
like flowers in a garden -
Just plant the right seeds.
Not doing what we
want because of others is
not life - It’s prison.
Like weeds take over
a garden, habits will us
without good tending.
Religion - Worship
it, pray to it, hide in it -
But not using it.
“Happy again”, she
thought, when she buys her next thing -
Forever shopping.
Moaning problems are
unfair, wastes energy we
could use to solve them.
The developed world?
Developed outwardly, not
inwardly perhaps.
“I know who I am” -
But who is this “I” that says
“I know who I am”?
Becoming like your
Enemy means you’ve lost the
battle and the war.
Freedom that needs things
can go, freedom granted can
be taken away.
Regret - Setting up
an unattained ideal, not
getting what I want.
Locked up tight in a
cold dark matchbox - Unable
to strike out and light.
So many words said,
endlessly - Meaning no more
than when first spoken.
Mouth opens, rubbish
falls out - Mindlessly building
mountains of nonsense.
Things happened before,
they will do so again - That’s
just the way it is.
Doing something that
benefits another should
be reward enough.
Seeing what’s wrong with
people depresses - Looking
for the good, uplifts.
When ill, avoid just
becoming your symptoms, an
object of disease.
Love yourself, give not
take, live simple, cause no harm,
care about others.
When something is done,
ask what is the intention
behind the action.
Ecstasy - Short term
immediate pleasure, no
thought for the future.
Content with what you
have - Not suffering, craving
things you cannot get.
Changing your mind is
not wrong - If done through reason,
freedom and judgement.
By understanding
ourselves, we’ll have all the
books we’ll ever need.
To understand the
world and everyone else,
understand yourself.
It takes the death of
the old for there to be the
birth of something new.
Not indulging or
repressing, just becoming
open to what is.
Caring for others
is almost impossible
when hurting yourself.
Helping others with
their problems highlights your own,
confronting yourself.
Things tend to hurt so
bad, when we hold on so tight
to blaming others.
When hurting, we blame
others or feel guilty - Not
look at why we hurt.
Is it possible,
to ever walk in a room
with no agenda?
Making others right
or wrong, to feel secure
in uncertainty.
Caring for others
with problems, may mean seeing
the same within us.
Breathing in the pain
of others, feeling it, and
breathing out good-will.
Grasping even good
beliefs with aggression, just
breeds more aggression.
The way to stop war
is to stop hating those we
call the enemy.
Fruitlessly craving
the secure certainty
that can never be.

the USA - The young boy
wears a Nike shirt.
Feelings come and they
will go - It just depends on
how long it will take.
Failure at goals
set by others - They weren’t mine,
so I’ve not failed.
Anger is just a
feeling, a response - What we
do with it matters.
Forever craving
this and that - Quenching our
thirst but still thirsty.
No living person
will ever be consistent -
Only dead ones are.
By becoming dull
to the pains of life, we miss
it’s simple pleasures.
Doing what needs to
be done without wasting time
and energy why.
Happiness might be
knowing that we don’t need to
strive for happiness.
Everything starts
as a thought, a dream - The art
is to make it real.
Thinking that only
murderers can kill, misses
the same in us all.
All children are born
perfect - It’s adults after
that can mess them up.
What dies inside us
whilst we live is worse than the
death of life later.
Apathy will give
political dictators
the power they crave.
There is always ‘choice’,
however difficult the
Consequences seem.
Thinking and acting
like the world owes us something -
But we are the world.
Heaven is here, now -
But with the belief it is
elsewhere, we miss it.
As actions come from
thoughts, by having good thoughts good
actions will follow.
As athletes work to
get fit, those of weak thoughts can
train for right thinking.
Changing how we think
about things can change how we
feel and what we do.
Those that may copy
will tend to do, but often
not understand why.
Wherever you are,
‘paradise’ always appears
to be somewhere else.
