RADIO
For much of my life, I had a big interest and passion in radio and music. My poem (on this website) about 'Why I Like Radio' says a bit more about why.
But during my childhood, there wasn't the huge array of TV channels, radio stations, and music channels that exist now. There certainly wasn't the Internet, with access to music and radio - and everything else that exists on 'YouTube' - throughout the whole World. We didn't have digital Social Media - like 'Facebook', 'Twitter' & 'Instagram' - where everything that ever happens (or that can be made-up) can be circulated to millions in a click! There wasn't the opportunity for immediate digital music downloads; or music sharing or streaming sites; or 'cloud' storage facilities, opening up access to a much wider range of artists and music.
During my childhood, access to music was either vinyl records; cassettes; going somewhere 'live'; 'Top Of The Pops' on BBC TV; or significantly Radio - initially illegal or foreign stations; followed by a few BBC national & local radio; and then Independent Commercial Local Radio stations throughout the Country.
From a young age, I regularly listened to, read about, and learnt about, many aspects of radio. I also carried out reading & research for a personal project I did over a number of years when younger, also involving the very detailed creation of a 'made-up' radio station - including the devising of programme scheduling, shows & features; making-up original jingles; and doing regular simulated 'real-time' broadcasts with two record decks and a number of cassette players, including cueing-in the actual IRN News, and even ringing real people up at random inviting them to take part in 'on-air' competitions!
As a child in the sixties, I remember hearing the pirate ‘Radio Caroline’ & 'Radio London', and listening to ‘Radio Luxembourg’, through fading, crackling and whistling sound; and being up all-night with the radio 'talkshows' (having a desire to have a late-night talk & music show myself); and then the birth of commercial ‘Independent Local Radio’ and the all-news station, LBC, with the exciting launch eight days later of the new (and back then, 'local') ‘Capital Radio’ (covering London) on 16th October 1973 (initially with their MW transmitter located on the Lots Rd Power Station in Chelsea, at the end of my grandparent's street), which I listened to much of the time.
I remember regularly listening to, and being especially influenced by, Kenny Everett, who inspired me to write and make my own stories up (along similar lines to Kenny’s ‘Captain Kremmen’) when I was around 15 years old, and recording them on cassette, using different cassette machines & turntables, and delicately editing them with scissors and tape!
I spoke to Kenny Everett on-air a couple of times, and was lucky enough to be with him in the studio at ‘Capital Radio’, where I did a junior journalist spot for their children’s magazine show called ‘Hullabaloo’ when I was around 15/16 years old.
With the more recent arrival of the Internet, radio stations from around the World have become available, often listening to radio stations from other countries, particularly the USA Californian and New York radio stations.
People I have particularly liked and listened to have included Kenny Everett, Emperor Rosko, Roger Scott, Nicky Horne, Dave Cash, Kenny & Cash, Graham Dene, Steve Wright, Robbie Vincent, Adrian Love, Johnnie Walker, Brian Hayes, Anna Raeburn, Tony Blackburn, Ed Stewart, Janice Long, Jo Whiley, Radcliff & Maconie, Sara Cox, Bob Harris, and John Peel. Wolfman Jack, who I particularly heard about through Kenny Everett's shows, was also someone I found interesting!!
When I was the National Secretary of the 'National Union of School Students' around 1977, I did some TV programmes (‘Man Alive Report’ and a BBC Schools Programme) and radio interviews, including a debate with Shirley Williams, Secretary of State for Education, as part of the Great Education Debate.
When involved as Training & Development Manager for a Leicestershire charity for 20 years, I was substantially involved in a lot of press and media work, involved in numerous radio interviews, features & documentaries regarding HIV/AIDS, health & social issues; was guest newspaper reviewer on 'BBC Radio Leicester' a number of times; was involved in a range of discussion panels; and also had a one-hour feature (a sort of 'Desert Island Discs') on BBC Radio Leicester with John Florence, focusing upon my life/background with relevant music.
Through my involvement as a performer in three major productions with the 'Little Theatre', I was interviewed by Monica Winfield on 'BBC Radio Leicester' .
As a Volunteering Development Manager, I liaised with a few community & hospital radio stations, especially advising when starting up, and helping to promote/develop volunteering.
Whilst I was always interested in getting involved with radio, there wasn't as many opportunities to do so when I was younger (unlike today with the Internet and community radio), but after getting involved in the Royal Court Theatre’s Youth Theatre in London in the seventies, I decided to go to drama college for three years, and then professional acting work, joining 'Equity', and working on and off in theatre, performing, and running drama workshops.
My performance/drama background was also useful experience when I spent 20 years as a trainer/tutor; and I am particularly interested in writing, including writing & performing my own spoken word poetry, especially at a club in Leicester.
After 13 years in Fleckney (having been a Parish Councillor there for most of that time, and Chaiman for 4 years), I moved to Market Harborough in 2013.
Following attending the HFM ‘Introduction to Radio Broadcasting’ course in 2014, I was pleased to become an HFM presenter, covering many various shows, often welcoming people aboard my ‘Musical Mystery Tour’ through the rich, diverse & great musical landscape, with a varied mix and range of music from yesterday & today, including some of the best established & newer singer-songwriters & musicians; and songs with meaning; that have stood the test of time; have words that matter; a point to make; or perhaps a story to tell; usually a featured artist; and more. You never know what's around the next corner...It’s all about the Music....
From Thursday 24th March 2016, my 'Musical Mystery Tour' became a regular show on 'Harborough FM' on alternate Thursday evenings, 7.00-10.00pm ; and then from 7th March 2019, from 6pm to 9pm; and then following nearly 4 years of, my regular fortnightly Thursday evening show, from 1st March 2020, it moved to every Sunday, 4-7pm.
Since 2007, HFM (Harborough FM) has been the full-time community radio station on 102.3FM for Market Harborough, South Leicestershire & North Northamptonshire (and all over the UK and the World live on the Internet). www.harboroughfm.co.uk

'HARBOROUGH CARNIVAL' QUIZ EVENING - QUIZ MASTER:
HOSTING/ASSISTANT HOSTING/ASSISTING (with HFM):
HFM 'INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY RADIO' COURSE:
Selected edited highlights of some radio appearances; some full shows; and my poem about "Why I Like Radio", can be heard at: www.mixcloud.com/GordonWarren
