TIMES CHANGE, MEMORIES REMAIN
I was nine; you were eight, sitting there upon the gate.
Watching all the trains go by, expecting to be friends for life.
But we soon left school, to go our separate ways.
You, to college; and me, to the factory.
Promising to always be there; to help each other, through thick and thin.
But never imagining, how our lives might change;
or consider what challenges the future might bring.
Although our lives were changing, the memories still remained.
Just hoping that one day, we could be together again.
But would you still remember, playing our childhood games;
or care about our promise, to always be best friends.
We hadn't seen each other, for so many years.
I heard you were married, with everything you need.
The man you married was a millionaire, helping you achieve your aim.
The world became your playground, every day a crazy game.
Most days, I heard you on the radio or singing on MTV.
Becoming big in the music business, was always one of your dreams.
You had a hit or two, and the public and media soon hounded you.
But when I saw you on the TV screen or in the magazines,
you didn't seem like the girl I knew, the girl with all those dreams.
The childhood excitement, had now faded from your eyes.
Those dreams that were so special, seem to have left you asking "why?"
You became so big, in such a short time; your feet didn't touch the ground.
Running here, there, and everywhere; no true friend was around.
But as your hits soon faded away, it looked like the bubble had burst.
Your fans were long gone now, idolising someone else.
But scandal in the tabloids still haunted you every day.
Affairs, drugs, and crooked agents, stole your image and money away.
Your marriage ended in a Court of Law, and rehab followed next,
and the failure of a 'reality' show, ended in more debt.
My heart became broken, when I heard about your death.
By booze and pills in a seedy hotel; away from it all, nobody with you.
Feeling sad I couldn't help you, when you needed someone there,
unable to keep my promise, to always love and care.
Although your short life ended, you talent left a mark.
So happy we were friends; but sad we remained apart.
Never forgetting our days together, playing our childhood games.
Not concerned about the future, whilst waving at the trains.
